As you probably have heard, Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the former online black market known as Silk Road, has been sentenced to life in prison. A shit ton of news sources have articles on it, so I’ll save you my terrible writing.

If you don’t know what Silk Road is/was here is its basic premise:

You could buy/sell illicit drugs, services, etc anonymously

Opinions on his sentence? I’m curious as to what others think about this.

I think it’s a little severe, but judging from the severity of the charges, I’m not surprised.

It seems like sentencing John Browning to life for his guns comitting murders.

Not entirely. A gun can be used for purposes other than murder (although some would argue use in law enforcement and military is murder, but that is neither here nor there). Here you have a website where people can sell anything with “complete” anonymity, and according to Wikipedia, 70% of the sales and listings on the site were for narcotics, although there were legal things for sale.

I don’t think it’s too severe. It was basically an online cartel sized operation. Even though it was made up of individual sellers who weren’t linked to one leader he provided the foundation to enormous illegal activity.

I was thinking that might be more their reason as well. Hell, bankers do worse shit than this and they never see jail time.

The prosecution and the trial court have opened themselves up to being reversed on appeal.

8th Amendment and all that jazz.
